So, I’m currently getting the pictures ready for viewing from 2 of the 2.5 rolls of 35mm film but I thought I’d do a more current update on my life.

For some time now I’ve been planning on going to VCU for photography school. I know that VCU has the #1 arts program in the country for public schools and the #3rd or something for Photography majors. I didn’t really think that was a big deal. So, I was advised to do the “art foundation” courses at my community college since it would be cheaper. What no one told me is that the art foundation is actually a sub school of the School of the Arts! And, since VCU is such a “top school”, you not only have to submit a portfolio to get into the Art School (expected) you have to submit one to get into their prep classes! I was perusing the website and it said to submit 2D & 3D artwork. I was a little confused. Am I supposed to already be a potter or sculptor before I get into school? So I emailed them:

I am currently attending NOVA and I was hoping to transfer to VCU in the spring. I see for the Art Foundation portfolio you need 2D & 3D work. I’m not entirely sure what 3D would consist of. Would it be some kind of sculpture? I am hoping to accepted into the Photography major but all I have is examples of that. I am not very adept at drawing or painting or making sculpture. I am unsure of what to do.

Dear Genevieve,

Thank you for your interest in VCUarts!
3D work means any type of work that is not 2D (flat). 3D work can include sculpture out of a variety of media, furniture, ceramics, etc.
While you do not have to have 3D work in your portfolio, you should definitely have a variety of media. Your portfolio should include more than just photographs.
You should include drawings done from observation. Try to show us the breadth of what you can do – if you are only doing photography right now, then you should try to take an art class where you will have the opportunity to explore different media, or try exploring these things on your own.

Yes! I should already be an art genius before I attempt to get into their glorious art program. So, knowing that this was an incredibly competitive program & I am not I decided to forgo yet another dream of mine (after high school I wanted to go to film school but that didn’t work out, for example). That’s not to say I would stop photography but it is to say that I’m giving VCU and their elite art program the finger and moving on.
Gael and I have been talking about possibly moving out west- maybe San Diego. We could work for a year and once we get resident status, enroll in school there. I’ve also been considering a major in Asian Studies. I mean, if we move out there it’s likely quite a few of my credits I’ve taken so far won’t transfer so I’ll practically be back at square one anyways.

Who knows if this will actually work out, I mean none of the plans I’ve made since high school have actually worked out so this could end up just them same. *shrugs* Just a little bud of a thought now. It really depends on Gael finding a good enough job for us to live on for a year and then some while we finish up school. If this happens, it probably will happen around the same time we would have moved to Richmond- sometime in late December to mid January. Keep your fingers crossed for me! I’ve always wanted to move to California & it seems like this could be my opportunity

Today is my birthday! I’m 24 now Hello mid- 20s, goodbye early 20s!

What am I doing to celebrate? Not much. Yesterday was my brother-in-law’s 19th birthday. We both (apparently) want to see Ghost Town so Gael & I might be seeing that with him and his parents. (If not with them then by ourselves.) I’m excited. It looks funny!
Sunday I’m going to a local Chinese restaurant called Yen Cheng. Last time I went there for my birthday it was year of the Rabbit and they gave me some ceramic rabbits. I want to get some ceramic rats this year since it’s my zodiac year.

Other than that, not much. Still insanely busy! My job is a pain in the ass but I’m having a hard time finding a new one. My boss and my boss’ boss are jerks. The main boss talks down to me and is really, really rude. Also, people are constantly smoking cigarettes in the office and it bothers my allergies I’m afraid to say anything lest they get really angry and fire me. It’s a tough situation.

I’ve felt like my school- load isn’t too much and my mom encouraged me take a Japanese class but they’ve all already started. I should really use my Rosetta Stone.

Ugh, it feels like ages since I’ve had some time to sit down and write a blog… ok, maybe I’ve had some time but I’ll explain that in a minute. First off, I’d like to [edit] last post & say that my mother informed me the day of last post saying she hadn’t put Bear to sleep yet. Apparently she was waiting for my sister’s friend to visit from England so he and my sister would take Bear to get the deed done. Thus, they went on 27 May 08. Different day, same outcome. [/edit]

You know, there are so many good reasons for me not writing a blog… the most important of them not being school or work, but finding a website that has 2 full seasons of Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Hello memory lane! This show started near the end of my 7th grade year (when I was 11) & I’m sure I wasn’t allowed to watch it but I definitely remember sitting in front of a TV to watch it. Maybe I sneaked over to a friends house- can’t remember. Anyways, if you’d like the link here you go! Enjoy!
(I am tempted to wish they had more seasons but I know this would just encourage me to not do homework so I guess it’s for the best!)

On the job front, I have been to several interviews and nothing worked out. That is until my last one. I interviewed for an accounting assistant which is basically the same job I had at GDIT. I get paid more than twice of what I’m making at my current job & close to 50 cents more than at GDIT. I’m pretty stoked because not only can I pay my bills completely and on time but I can actually save money now.

On the school front, my bio teacher sucks. He teaches the class like it’s some high- level bio class. This is beginning bio (101), mind you. I’m fairly certain the teachers are supposed to assume no one has had bio before and teach the class as such. I, for one, haven’t had a bio class since 10th grade (age 15/16) so it’s been like 8 years. He teaches off of slides but sits with his back to us so we can’t hear him speak. He refuses to give us study guides saying that the slides “are [our] study guides!” The thing is, he breezes so fast through them we can’t even take notes. After our first test last Thursday, half the class walked out when he started talking to us like we were imbeciles saying he won’t try to help us pass & that’s our job. He thinks if he helps us, he’s spoon- feeding us. Basically, he’s a jerk. A lot of kids are going to the dean & if they ask me to join I will. I wish I could walk out, but I’ve finally gotten my parents to help pay for school & it’s too late to get their money back anyways. If this asshat makes my GPA (grade point average) fall below a 3.0 I will attack him one night.

Last, but not least, my sister graduated high school on 7 June 08. For some insane reason the ceremony took place at 8am. It was at her school so it’s not like they had to compete for time. I got badly sunburned there & then a bit more at my parents’ house in their pool. I believe I ended up getting sun poisoning and have been rather ill since then. (Feeling a bit better today, though.)
After that was my friend’s 21st birthday party. We had dinner at a restaurant and then went to her friend’s house for some activities & watched some episodes of Bones & I kept thinking of David Boreanaz & how I thought he was hotter on Angel than Buffy when I was kid but now I think he’s hotter when he was younger. Why is his head so wide now? C’est très bizarre, non?

*note: today’s quote is from my bio teacher. some girl was trying to figure out what one the ways stuff that moves between … tissues? … is called. mr bio prof was not too happy about her way of thinking. oops!
